Trigger Warning: Child Abuse
Just — (a) I am not sure why we are discussing cultural differences when the person in question was a white dude. Like, we are not trying to invalidate, judge, shame or condemn the way your parents might have raised you, because we don’t know your life — that is, we don’t know how your parents punished you or any of that, and we cannot make guesses on that — and irrelevant to the situation at hand.
And (b) I am not sure why we are acting like his actions are suddenly grey. We know what happened. We know what triggered the shooting. A Facebook status. A Facebook status¹. To pretend otherwise to justify the way you were raised in a non-abusive household is just ridiculously privileged. So please just shut up².
¹Not that his actions would have been defendable if the situation was any different. Nothing justifies shooting a laptop and uploading the video to further shame and torment as a form of “punishment.”
²Speaking as someone who hasn’t been abused, jsyk.
